NOT SO WORDLESS Wednesday: Tom Sawyer Days at Work

Tom Sawyer Day @ Work  (written on back)
I absolutely LOVE this dress...I wish mom had kept it.  This picture was taken in 1937 or 1938 in Culver City, California where mom worked for the 'Culver City Star News'.  I wondered why they would have a "Tom Sawyer Day" at wok so I did some googling and came up with this in Wikipedia.  Apparently a film came out about that time - "In 1938 The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was filmed in Technicolor by the Selznick Studio. It starred Tommy Kelly as Tom and was directed by Norman Taurog. Most notable was the cave sequence designed by William Cameron Menzies."

From what I can surmise there was a lot of hype built up before the opening night....much like the "Star Wars" movies of the 1970-1980 period and the "Twilight" movies of the new millennium time frame.  I'm willing to bet there were Tom Sawyer and Rebeca "Becky" Thatcher, figurines for the kids to play with.

Did mom make this dress?  She was certainly an expert seamstress and made most of our clothing from the time we were born.  If I were a betting person I'd say 1000 to 1 she made it!  But what happened to it after the "Tom Sawyer Day" at work?  Did she cut it down and alter it into something more appropriate to wear on a regular basis?  Did she pack it away and then open it 20-25 years later only to give it to the Goodwill or the Salvation Army?  Maybe she took it apart 10 years later and  made matching dresses for her 3 little girls.  I think it's something we'll never know. To my knowledge I never saw this dress except in this picture. But it's fun to dwell on the 'what ifs'

If I had this dress in it's entirety today I would have it on a mannequin and MAYBE take it off to wear to a costume party....or for a presentation when reading "Tom Sawyer" to a classroom full of children.

Wordless Wednesday (Almost)

Found in my mother's scrapbook - I have no idea where this golf course is located.
She lived in Goshen, Indiana at the time so I'm guessing it is somewhere in that part of the country.

(Not So) Wordless Wednesday

Margaret Troyer Post (my mother) - on left, her friend Eleanor -on right.  I love the almost matching outfits. Mom loved to sew and I'm sure she either made both of these or they bought the material together planning to make these outfits.  But then maybe it was a coincidence...

Pictures taken late 1920's/early 1930's in Long Lake Michigan at my grandparent's vacation home.

Mom's Scrapbook - A Century of Progress 1933

Wonder if they realized what the next century would bring!  I wonder today what the next 23 years will bring when we hit that 'next century' mark.

Although it does not specifically say, I think it's a good assumption these pictures are from the Chicago Worlds Fair in 1933.

Clicking on each page above will enlarge it and give you an opportunity to view the writings and pictures better.

From My Moms Scrapbook - Lucille Rosendale/Harry Wirick

From 'My Mom's Scrapbook' - I assume Lucille Rosendale was one of my mom's friends either from school or from work in Goshen Indiana.  Lucille also had a sister, or maybe a cousin, by the name of Mary Lou.

I remember visiting Harry and Lucille Wirick in Burlingame, California in the late 1950's or maybe 1960.  I know I was in high school as I had made friends with the boy across the street, Doug. I think there was more than one visit to see them because I remember being excited to be going back (we lived in southern California).

I do not remember meeting the Wirick's son, Jon Charles.  The birth announcement below gives no indication of year of birth unfortunately. I do not remember if they had other children.

Elizabeth Schrock

Elizabeth Schrock (9/20/1853 to 1938)  was the third child and first daughter of Yost Y Schrock and Martha Plank.  Elizabeth was my maternal great grandmother on my grandfather's side.  She married Joseph J. Troyer (1849-1915) on March 17, 1872.

My Mom's Scrapbook - Bridge Anyone?

Bridge is one of my favorite games.  I play duplicate as opposed to party or rubber bridge.  I've played in a few tournaments and always enjoy the competition.

I don't remember my mom ever playing bridge - although I do remember her sister Dorothy playing.  So I was surprised to go through mom's scrapbook and find so much evidence that she once enjoyed the game, while she was single and still lived in Goshen Indiana.  The George and Dorothy Tullis mentioned in the newspaper article were mom's best friends.  There were several newspaper articles and bridge score cards in mom's scrapbook.  It was fun to see how much she played and how she did....quite well from what I can see!

Mom's Scrapbook - Ogle-Ramsby

From my mother's scrapbook - Margaret Troyer Post had many friends - the Ogles/Ramsby's are from Goshen Indiana.  I don't believe we children ever met them nor do I remember mom talking about them but that was the way it was with a lot of her friends from Goshen.  She did go back for high school reunions, and had several close friends/relatives from there that she would mention.  In someways I feel like Goshen was a lifetime away from her (after marriage).  I guess kind of like I feel about my life growing up.

I do not know if the Ramsby's went on to have other children (or if they maybe have one before this son).

Anyone know this family?  Please contact me by visiting my profile (on right) and clicking on the 'email' under my picture on left hand side.

Mom's Scrapbook

This program, found in my mother's scrapbook, is dated October 14, 1941. They were married October 4, 1941.  Dad was in the National Guard with the '40th infantry division' (scroll half way down the page to World War II) stationed in San Luis Obispo California. He was honorably discharged from the service on October 24, 1941.   Click on pictures to enlarge:
