My Mom's Scrapbook - Bridge Anyone?

Bridge is one of my favorite games.  I play duplicate as opposed to party or rubber bridge.  I've played in a few tournaments and always enjoy the competition.

I don't remember my mom ever playing bridge - although I do remember her sister Dorothy playing.  So I was surprised to go through mom's scrapbook and find so much evidence that she once enjoyed the game, while she was single and still lived in Goshen Indiana.  The George and Dorothy Tullis mentioned in the newspaper article were mom's best friends.  There were several newspaper articles and bridge score cards in mom's scrapbook.  It was fun to see how much she played and how she did....quite well from what I can see!

Wordless Wednesday - Almost

These two charmers are in my collection of unidentified pictures.  The picture was found among my dad's items. Based on what I think is the date (1883-1893) I suspect that one of these two girls is my dad's mother (Bess Coulter) and the other is one of her sisters Harriet or Haysel Coulter.  Bess was the older of the 3 girls thus she would be the one on the left.  Bess was born in 1883, Harriet in 1891, Haysel (no birth date).  Unlikely the 2nd girl is Harriet because of the difference in ages.  There was also a brother, Camillius (no birth date).

No markings on the photo but on the back are five number 4 written in pencil

Saturday Night Genealogy Fun: My Matrilineal Line

Over at Genea-Musings Randy Seaver’s latest Saturday Night Fun assignment is:

1) List your matrilineal line - your mother, her mother, etc. back to the first identifiable mother. Note: this line is how your mitochondrial DNA was passed to you!

2) Tell us if you have had your mitochondrial DNA tested, and if so, which Haplogroup you are in.

OK, I'm game - I haven't gone back that far (in this line) YET but here's what I've got:

Mary Dana Post
Margaret Elizabeth Troyer (1909 ID -1987 CA) m. Hays Coulter Post
Mary Maria Motzko (1884 MN -19523 CA) m. Elmer David Troyer
Maria Fietzek (1857 Nowa Wies Krolewska Opolskie Poland -1927 ID) m. Philipp Motzko
Catherina Dyga (1816 Debie Poland – 1862 ) m. Martin Fietzek (Fiecek)

Mitochondrial DNA tested/Haplogroup - never heard of this and went to Wikipedia to check it out but will have to do further research to understand what it is all about - more on this at a later date.  Actually it all sounded like Greek to me!

Happy Mother's Day

The following was written by Erma Bombeck and originally published in her Mother’s Day column - May 12, 1974

When the Good Lord was creating mothers,
He was into his sixth day of “overtime”
when an angel appeared and said,
“You’re doing a lot of fiddling around on this one.”

And the Lord said,
“Have you read the specs on this order?
She has to be completely washable, but not plastic;
Have 180 movable parts... all replaceable;
Run on black coffee and leftovers;
Have a lap that disappears when she stands up;
A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to
a disappointed love affair;
And six pairs of hands.”
    The angel shook her head slowly and said,
    “Six pairs of hands... no way.”

    “It’s not the hands that are causing me problems,” said the Lord.
    “It’s the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have.”

    “That’s on the standard model?” asked the angel.

    The Lord nodded. “One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks,
    ’What are you kids doing in there?’ when she already knows.
    Another here in the back of her head that sees what she
    shouldn’t but what she has to know,
    and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child
    when he goofs up and say, ’I understand and I love you’ without
    so much as uttering a word.”

    “Lord,” said the angel, touching His sleeve gently, “Go to bed. Tomorrow...”

    “I can’t,” said the Lord, “I’m so close to creating something so close to myself.
    Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...
    can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...
    and can get a nine-year-old to stand under a shower.”

    The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. “It’s too soft,” she sighed.

    “But she’s tough!” said the Lord excitedly.
    “You cannot imagine what this mother can do or endure.”

    “Can it think?”

    “Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise,” said the Creator.

    Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.
    “There’s a leak,” she pronounced.
    “I told You You were trying to push too much into this model.”

    “It’s not a leak,” said the Lord. “It’s a tear.”

    “What’s it for?”

    “It’s for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride.”

    “You are a genius,” said the angel.

    The Lord looked somber. “I didn’t put it there,” He said.

    I feel blessed that through my genealogy work that I have connected with so many mothers....my mother, my mother-in-law, my grandmothers (whom I knew for such a short time and don't have any memories of), my great grandmothers (all four of whom I have or will be doing posts on) and my great-great grandmothers (some of whom I have information on but still some with research to be done on) ... Don't forget all the mother's in your life this Mother's Day.

    Mom's Scrapbook - Ogle-Ramsby

     From my mother's scrapbook - Margaret Troyer Post had many friends - the Ogles/Ramsby's are from Goshen Indiana.  I don't believe we children ever met them nor do I remember mom talking about them but that was the way it was with a lot of her friends from Goshen.  She did go back for high school reunions, and had several close friends/relatives from there that she would mention.  In someways I feel like Goshen was a lifetime away from her (after marriage).  I guess kind of like I feel about my life growing up.

    I do not know if the Ramsby's went on to have other children (or if they maybe have one before this son).

    Anyone know this family?  Please contact me by visiting my profile (on right) and clicking on the 'email' under my picture on left hand side.

    Ordination Card

    I'm not sure how this Eric P. O'Brien is related to my family.  Pomona, California is where my Aunt and Uncle relocated to after marrying and leaving Goshen Indiana.  Their relocation took place during this time frame. My mother and her parents moved to the Los Angeles/Culver City area.  I have found no O'Brien's in my mother's lineage.  So maybe Father O'Brien is related to Dorothy's husband, Bill Haines?  Or maybe he was just someone sponsored by their church in Pomona.  Dorothy and Bill were members of  Saint Joseph's Catholic Church, as was my family when we moved there 20 years later.

    It would be interesting to obtain additional information on this.  The card was found in my mother's scrapbook, which makes me think she must have been at the ceremony.

    Rosalea Tullos Motzko

    Rosella M. Tullos (Tulles) married Philipp Martin Motzko Jr. on June 30, 1937 in Vallejo, California.

    In the 1950's we visited them a couple times but I do not remember any particulars on these visits.  I just remember that while on vacation we would stop to see them.  They lived at 516 Marin Street in Vallejo California.  They had no children so we five children probably sat and bickered among ourselves, as we often did, or maybe my father took us for a walk while mom would visit her Uncle Philipp and Aunt Rosalea.
    The girl in the picture with the Motzkos is yet to be identified.  I've eliminated my siblings.  She may be a cousin (I have a couple of cousins that were this age at the time the picture was taken) or she may be a neighbor child (which I doubt as I have another picture with this girl in it).

    Philipp worked for the Mare Island Shipyard, as far as I know Rosella was a housewife.  When he retired they moved to Paradise, California (in the foothills of N. California's Sierra Nevada Mountains).

    One thing I always found interesting about Rosella is that her maiden name of Tulles/Tullos is so close to the spelling of my mother's best friend Dorothy's husband George Tullis.  I remember asking mom if they were related and she said they were not.

    No death date for Rosella Tullos Motzko; Philipp died in December 20, 1979.
