Those Dog Days of Summer

Summertime! One has to love this time of the year...the days are long, the weather is warmer, the kids are out of school, and vacation is on the horizon. As we get further and further into the summer and the weather heats up from just warm to HOT we try to think of ways to keep ourselves cooled down.  The "Dog Days of Summer" have arrived!  This is usually the hottest, steamiest days of summer.  The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11.

What did you do to keep cool during these Dog Days.  As a child my Dog Days were filled with sprinkler time with my brothers and sisters. We also went to Manchester public pool in L.A. to cool off. Our kids spent their time much the same way either in sprinklers, with hoses, or in blow up pools with friends and/or relatives.  Many times we'd take off for the beach.  We only lived about 5 miles from the ocean so it was easy to drive down there - not as as easy to pack all the stuff, lunch and kids and friends but well worth the effort!

Treasure Chest Thursday

Goshen School, Goshen Indiana taken sometime in the 1890s.  My maternal Grandfather Elmer David Troyer is in this picture as well as his brother William Frank and their sisters Edith Magaline (Edie) and Ella May.  There was a fifth child in the family, Jesse Edward but he died at the age of 2 months. (If you click on the picture it will enlarge - check the bottom of the photo to see where Edie and Elmer are in the picture.)

My sister holds the original in California...she let me take it home when we were there a couple of weeks ago, to scan - all was fine, I scanned the picture, took it to put in a priority post envelope and noticed a couple of the faces were no longer there! Obliterated! Off into la-la land.  I was so upset and didn't want to tell my sister -- but got up the nerve and sent her an e-mail.  She was very understanding and didn't even get mad at me.  Yesterday she received the pictures in the mail...I received an e-mail from her - 'was the picture broken in half when I took it'......noooooooo.  It was not broken when I put it in the envelope to mail, just a couple half faceless people in it. But it is broken now!  I feel terrible about all this.  Thank God I had gotten a good scan of it before it fell apart.

This is an important message to take extra care with your oldest pictures - not just in handling them but in transporting them from person to person.  And make sure you have scans of all of them.  A good scan is better than nothing.

Tombstone Tuesday - Bill and Dorothy Haines

William O. and Dorothy H. Haines were my uncle and aunt on my mother's side.  Dorothy was mom's only sibling and they were very close.  Bill and Dorothy were married on July 6, 1935 and had 4 children - 3 girls and a boy.

From the time I was 12 until I moved away from home we lived within walking distance of  Uncle Bill and Auntie Dorothy. Our only cousins and we 5 kids all went to the same schools together.  Uncle Bill was always known as the disciplinarian in his family - I can remember feeling thankful that he wasn't my dad!  We'd go to their house for backyard bar-be-ques and on the back porch would hang an ominous looking long leather strap.  We kids knew exactly what it was for and I think we all breathed a sigh of relief knowing he couldn't touch us with it. 

There was also an apartment - one room with kitchen, bath (I believe) above their garage.  We'd climb up there and sit around and chat with the cousins for hours on end.  I remember the huge orange grove they had on the property behind the house and garage.  Rows and rows of trees...'delish' fruit growing from the trees...I don't remember if it was forbidden fruit, or if we were allowed to eat as much as we could.  If it was forbidden I'm sure we stayed away with no problem for fear of that leather belt.  We did take short cuts through the trees to get back on the closest street to our house.  I remember an old wooden tree house built in one of those trees that the 3 boys (my 2 brother's and their boy cousin) would hide out in to get away from the girls.
