Mystery Monday: Who Is Nora H?

Nora H 1906 - This picture was
originallly much smaller, more the
size of the backside of photo
on right.
wrtten on back of left hand picture

These pictures were very hard to work with - they are both no more than a fingernail in size...but when scanned they came up fairly large...just not easy for 'playing' with and 'setting up' in a blog.  I have no idea who this Nora H (1906) is - her picture and the note attached to it were in an envelope...the picture was so tiny it was almost overlooked.

Nora is a beautiful youg woman - looks to be in the 14 to 16 age group.  The picture, backside of picture, and note were all in an envelope waiting for her to open it.  It was inside the book I purchased on e-bay "Descendants of Jacob Hochstetler' by Henry Hostettler.  Also with the picture was this note written in 197? (I assume that the 'H' on the back of the picture stands for either Hochstetler or Hostettler.)

Who's Hank? Who's Sis? Who is Aunt Emma Larabee and who is Fern?

Madness Monday: Amish Bishop Samuel Hochsettler

I am not sure what year this happened...it just says January 23.  From the clothing on the investigators it looks to be late 1920's or 1930's?  That's my guess, for what it's worth!  A handwritten note under the title of the article says "Is this in your book Nora?"  Wonder if they were meaning the book I just purchased from e-bay, or if it was a different one?  I plan on doing more research on this in the summer.

The newspaper article is from Goshen Indiana....my mother was a reporter...was she involved in the writing of the article?  Could she have known these people?  She graduated from Goshen High School in 1927 and started at the newspaper shortly afterwards.  If I'm correct on the range of years this article could have been written she might very well have remembered the incident.

Treasure Thursday: Hochstetler - Hostetler

I purchased this book on e-bay a few weeks ago...I'm not sure it's even related to my family but I figured for what I paid for it I wasn't really out anything.  I haven't had much of a chance to go through it yet but I found some great treasures inside the book....several newspaper articles, a picture, several postcards, and some other items.  If you will note: on the binding of the book the title is Jacob Hochstetler, the author is Harvey Hostetler....a close enough spelling that the name was probably changed somewhere down the line.

Susan Hostetler was my great-great grandparents, Yost and Martha (Plank) Schrock's first son's, Christian Schrock's, wife.  Also in my database there is a Dorene Hostetler who married a Cripe. Two of  Yost and Martha Schrock's daughters married Cripe's.  Whether a link is there or not is yet to be determined.

The book is fairly small print and is almost 1,200 pages, it was printed in 1912 and some of the genealogy lines go back to the 1600s.  I am hoping to look through this book extensively this summer, when I'm off work, and find a link to my ancestors.

Memories of Yost and Martha Schrock - part 3

J. Harvey Schrock Sr. (wife Flora Edith Gephert) was the 1st child of Christian and Susan (Hostetler) Schrock.  Born on April 16, 1874.

J. Harvey Schrock Memories

Grandfather's farm was considered the best wheat farm in the community.  On one day we threshed 1800 bushels of wheat. Christ Pletcher and I loaded all the bundles on the wagons.  Perhaps it was the way the farm was taken care of that made it produce so well.

He used to tell me whenever I wanted work, to come over, he would have something for me to do.  Grandfather was no hunter.  In the early days, when they were starting an orchard, the deer were so plentiful he had to replant his orchard three times.

Grandparents belonged to the Amish Church and later joined the Church of the Brethern.  He was needing a horse and heard an Amish man had one to sell.  He arrived there at noon and they asked him to eat first.  They set a table for him separate from them.  After dinner the man said "Now we will go look at the hourse".  Grandfather said, "If I am not good enough to eat with you I am not good enough to buy your horse", and left.  It was an Amish custom to not eat with anyone who had left the Amish Church.  Grandfather Hostetler was holding revival meetings at the Lake School house when Grandfather and Grandmother Schrock joined the Church of the Brethern.

************************
Mamie E. Schrock (Cooper) was the 3rd child and 2nd daughter of Issac and Maria (Burns) Schrock.  Issac was the 2nd son of Yost and Martha SchockMamie was born on June 20, 1879.  Cora Schrock (Schmidt) was the 2nd child and 1st daughter of Issac and Maria (Burns) Schrock  She was born on January 8, 1877.

Cora Schmidt amd Mamie Cooper Memories

We cannont remember very much about what went on at the time Grandfather and Grandmother Schrock was living.  We remember about going up that long lane once in a while from church and had a great dinner.

Mamie was there at the time when Grandma was lying low in bed and made pies for expected company.

Issac (Cooper) used to come over and call on Mamie while she was there.
