Christmas and Family 'Reunions'

Margaret Troyer Post's descendants and spouses/children
I just got home from my sister's house where we had a Christmas party/family reunion.  We had not had a family get together in 15 years.  We had to travel from Arizona to California but it was well worth the time/effort.  I've been planning this reunion since before Labor Day and it was disappointing that out of 130 descendants of my grandparents - Elmer Troyer and Mary Motzko Troyer that only 26 showed up for the reunion.  But let me tell you we had the cream of the crop when it came to the descendants.  Elmer and Mary had 2 children - my mother Margaret Troyer Post and her sister Dorothy Troyer Haines.  Four out of five of Margaret's children (now the 'elders' in the family) showed up with spouses for the party.  Dorothy had 4 children and all of them showed up.. Several of the next generation came (grandchildren of Margaret and Dorothy) and one of the current generation of great grandchildren.
Dorothy Troyer Haines' children/spouses

I felt sad that more of the younger ones did not come.  Some are just too busy with raising families and others just don't care.   But I'm really excited because 2 of my cousins brought me some awesome "older" pictures...some going back to the 1800's, and I received many pictures from after the turn of the century.  I'm ready to scan away at these.  Another cousin told me she had a box full of pictures in the back of one of her closets...she says that I really wouldn't want them because they are undated and there are no names on them and they are 'really old'....I'm still working on her to let me borrow them.  She's hesitant to give them up even for a little while.

The older couple sitting in the bottom picture are my oldest cousin and her husband.  Both are in bad health, she has Alzheimer's and he has Parkinson's disease....they were both such a pleasure to have at the get-together...there were a few problems getting them there but we finally worked it out...it would not have been the same without them.  She spent quite a bit of time flirting with the guys!  She may have lost her memory but she has not lost her sense of humor!

Genesis 1:22   And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

Thankful Thursday: Memories of Griswolds

While recently searching on-line for a large family gathering that I, in a VERY weak moment, volunteered to organize I found a picture (postcard) of a place that brings back many memories.  Griswold's is was located in Claremont, California.

Griswold's was the place of many of our family gatherings, both large and small, over the years and I thought WOW this would be great for get-together - but alas it's not to be - like all good things it's gone the way of the years and closed down in 1998.  They had a charming little pastry shop as you walked in the front door. They had regular dining as well as banquet rooms.

Griswold's is was located in Claremont, in southern California.  Not far from Route 66 it was a quick stop for truckers and also a favorite stop for tourist and/or locals for many years.

A little history behind it is that George Griswold and his family arrived in Claremont about 1915.  Here they began cultivating the land and using the already abundant fruit trees to make candid fruit and preserves.  Starting with a small gift shop they sold these to travelers who then sent them home.  The legacy of Griswold's continued even through several owners and their expanding the business.  Griswold's finally went Smorgasbord with a dinner theater.

In 1998, after years of scaling down the restaurant eventually was sold in a trustee's sale.  The building was leveled and Griswold's was left a memory for many after 80+ years.

Now after an afternoon trip down memory lane I'm still at a loss as where to hold our holiday get-together. So I'm back to work!

Those Dog Days of Summer

Add caption 1947 Jimmy, Martha, Mary Post

Summertime! One has to love this time of the year...the days are long, the weather is warmer, the kids are out of school, and vacation is on the horizon. As we get further and further into the summer and the weather heats up from just warm to HOT we try to think of ways to keep ourselves cooled down.  The "Dog Days of Summer" have arrived!  This is usually the hottest, steamiest days of summer.  The Old Farmer's Almanac lists the traditional timing of the Dog Days as the 40 days beginning July 3 and ending August 11.

What did you do to keep cool during these Dog Days.  As a child my Dog Days were filled with sprinkler time with my brothers and sisters. We also went to Manchester public pool in L.A. to cool off. Our kids spent their time much the same way either in sprinklers, with hoses, or in blow up pools with friends and/or relatives.  Many times we'd take off for the beach.  We only lived about 5 miles from the ocean so it was easy to drive down there - not as as easy to pack all the stuff, lunch and kids and friends but well worth the effort!

Remember Clothes Lines?

REMEMBER THE BASIC RULES FOR CLOTHES LINES?

1. You had to wash the clothes line before hanging any clothes - walk the entire lengths of each line with a damp cloth

2. You had to hang the clothes in a certain order, and always hang "whites" with "whites," and hang them first.

3. You never hung a shirt by the shoulders - always by the tail!. What would the neighbors think?

4. Wash day on a Monday! Never hang clothes on the weekend, or Sunday, for Heaven's sake!

5. Hang the sheets and towels on the outside lines so you could hide your
"unmentionables" in the middle (perverts, busybodies, y'know!)

6. It didn't matter if it was sub zero weather clothes would "freeze-dry."

7. Always gather the clothes pins when taking down dry clothes! Pins left
on the lines were "tacky!"

8. If you were efficient, you would line the clothes up so that each item
did not need two clothes pins, but shared one of the clothes pins with the
next washed item.

9. Clothes off of the line before dinner time, neatly folded in the clothes
basket, and ready to be ironed.

10. IRONED?! Well, that's a whole other subject!

A clothesline was a news forecast
To neighbors passing by,
There were no secrets you could keep
When clothes were hung to dry.

It also was a friendly link
For neighbors always knew
If company had stopped on by
To spend a night or two.

For then you'd see the "fancy sheets"
And towels upon the line;
You'd see the "company table cloths"
With intricate designs.

The line announced a baby's birth
From folks who lived inside -
As brand new infant clothes were hung,
So carefully with pride!

The ages of the children could
So readily be known
By watching how the sizes changed,
You'd know how much they'd grown!

It also told when illness struck,
As extra sheets were hung;
Then nightclothes, and a bathrobe, too,
Haphazardly were strung.

It also said, "Gone on vacation now"
When lines hung limp and bare.
It told, "We're back!" when full lines sagged
With not an inch to spare!
New folks in town were scorned upon
If wash was dingy and gray,
As neighbors carefully raised their brows,
And looked the other way .. . .

But clotheslines now are of the past,
For dryers make work much less.
Now what goes on inside a home
Is anybody's guess!

I really miss that way of life.
It was a friendly sign
When neighbors knew each other best
By what hung on the line.

Thankful Thursday - Ceasar and Hannah

Ceasar and Hannah

This picture was taken several years ago...Ceasar is now about 15 years and has lost most of his hair and teeth.  He's not as lively as he used to be and we fear his time with us may be short.  Ceasar lays by hubby's feet or on in his lap all the time.  Hannah is a pistol, anyone comes to the door she's like a 'bat outta hell' charging to the other room to go into hiding.  The first day we got her she disappeared on us.  We searched high and low for hours but no Hannah, we thought we'd lost her and we hadn't even had her an hour.  We finally found her under the car in the garage...how she got there we're not sure.  Now we don't let her out of sight unless we know she's in the house with us.  She loves to have her tummy rubbed and then spends most of her time hiding in the closet or under the bed.

We got Ceasar at a Petsmart in 1997....Petsmart works with the animal shelter to place pets that have been put up for adoption.  I can't believe anyone would have taken such a beautiful dog to the pound...but it was our gain.  Hannah was given to us by a breeder friend after she had her first liter.  We got her in 2004. I used to wonder how much she missed those babies she had carried and nursed.  As a mother I just cannot imagine.

Our gain on these two cuties - we are so thankful that they came into our lives and bless us in a big way.

Tuesday Talkings

Busy time this past weekend!  My sister Martha and hubby Gerry were here from California visiting and we had an AWESOME time.  Eating out at Red Robin on Friday night, eating out Saturday noon at Mimi's Cafe with our 1st cousin, once removed.  Bernie is not only a great cousin to meet and eat with and she's a really nice person too!  Plus she's BEAUTIFUL as you can tell by the picture.  She is the 3rd child of Leo and Hilary....Hilary being my 1st cousin and the daughter of Bill and Dorothy Haines.

After catching up on each other we said our goodbyes/see-you-laters to Bernie; Howard, Gerry, Martha and I were all off to Kim and John's housewarming party.  And then back to our house for some going through and helping to identify old pictures party, and eating again....this time pizza!  Kim and John showed up later and we all sat and talked about life in general, and how things were going....fun stuff.

Sunday was more eating, this time at Jason's Deli....personally I'm STUFFED, tired, and overall pooped-out!.  I got a lot of pictures ID'd with Martha's help so it was a very productive  but tiring weekend in which I ate too much food, and had way more fun than I've had in a LONG time!

Memory Monday - Thanksgiving Weekend 1977

It was Thanksgiving weekend 1977 - the kids had a 4 day weekend from school and Howard had 4 days off from work...lets do something nontraditional for a change - the weather was awesome as it often is in southern California so we decided 'what the heck, let's go camping' - now where to go - up Pacific Coast Highway our little van ran onward to McGrath State Beach in Ventura County.  Ah, the beauty of the beach campgrounds, not a lot of people this late in the year...my parents joined us.

I don't remember what we did for thanksgiving dinner - maybe we roasted a turkey over the campfire, maybe we went out to eat.  Maybe my kids remember and will post a comment here.  Whatever we did I'm sure it was fun and unconventional.

Poor kids - the weather was awesome but the ocean was cold.  I wanted to take a picture of them in the water so we could prove to friends and relatives in the mid-west and on the east coast that one does go into the water this late in the year!  So away they went - off into the water and then back again before they froze!  Just for mom, and her camera. But I did get a great picture (above) eh?!?

Unidentified Picture

I have this very large picture in my collection.  The picture originally was 16x16 but is broken in half.  It is embedded into heavy cardboard.  I have a couple other old pictures that were printed the same way (but are not the same people and have been id'd).  I took it to Fed Ex/Kinkos the other day and had it printed the largest they could (so this is from an 11x17 copy).

I'm looking into having the picture restored and would love to hang it on my wall someday.  I don't know who these people are though...I suspect they are family related and rather than being from the Post/Coulter/Hays side of the family I tend to think (no specific reason) that they are from the Post/Troyer/Schrock side.

What do you glean from this?

Knotts Berry Farm Pictures - 23 Years Later

Living in southern California most of my life a trip to Knotts Berry Farm was something fairly common and no big deal.  Knotts Berry Farm has changed A LOT since this picture was taken in 1946.  It use to be just shops, a couple of eating places, a picnic area, and maybe a couple of kids rides.  I'd put the kids in strollers and just wander through the shops.

Recently I've been scanning all family photos - I'm done with the pictures of our kids and us (46 years worth) and now I've started on pictures of me growing up with my brothers and sisters.  When done with these I've got a photo album of my moms...and a couple from my dads younger days.

It was really fun when I came across this picture of my brother (Jim) and me at Knotts Berry Farm (stamped on the back it said 'reprints 15¢, 2 for 25¢').  As I was scanning it I remembered scanning one a couple months previously of two of our children in this same setting.  I found it - filed neatly in my 1969 folder in "My Picture" section of the computer.  Love having these organized like this.

The one on the right was taken in July of 1969.  That's my Billy and Kimi!  I wonder if it's the exact same wagon that Jim and I sat on 23 years previously.  I wonder too if this same picture setting is available today.   I'm amazed at the difference in the quality of the picture.

I had a really hard time scanning the second picture.  I kept getting an error message saying that I did not have enough memory (now I know my memory is dying with age but come on, how did my scanner know that?).  Seriously, I closed all programs, I rebooted my computer, I did everything I could think of but 'no dice'.  I took it to Kinkos today and they refused to scan it saying that it was copyrighted.  So I brought it home and tried it one last time on my scanner and it worked!  Amazing - I did nothing different!  Anyone know why this would happen?  And how long does a copyright last? I also took another picture that was taken in 1920s/1930s and they would not scan it either, same reason.

Memory Monday - Vacation in Lake Tahoe

In the mid-80's we spent our vacation traveling from southern California up the coast to beautiful, awesome Lake Tahoe.  The kids had never been there and we thought it would be a great place to 'bond'...but, alas, the kids had gotten older and had either moved out or were busy doing their own thing - Kim had taken off, like she had several summers during her high school days, to visit her Aunt Martha, Uncle Gerry and kids in either Houston TX or Sliddell LA.  I believe my baby boy, Billy, had joined the army and was off at boot camp.  Jack had his own 'digs' and life....so that left Robert.  Although he was a junior in high school he was game to go with us....and not wanting him to be alone...we invited his younger cousin Danny to go with us.  He was thrilled because vacations were few and far between in his family.

Sooooooo we packed all our stuff in the back of the enclosed pick-up truck and headed off down the road. Life was good, we were all on a 'free-spirited' vacation and were going to just have fun....fun...and more fun.  We pulled into Lake Tahoe later that night and get out of the truck wanting something to eat.  But as the boys climbed out of the back of the truck we knew something was wrong - Bobby had turned a deep-sick shade of green.  Danny told us they tried to let us know but could not catch our attention.  Soooooo, they finally opened the side and back windows of the truck and stuck their heads out and...................well I think you get the gest!  There was a car full of girls driving right behind us about the boys ages - and they were laughing so hard it's a wonder there was not an accident. The poor boys were sooooooooo embarrassed!

After settling into our camp the boys went up and took showers and cleaned up.  We had hot soup and seven-up for dinner that night.

The next morning we discovered there was a McDonald's right across the street from our campground.  The three guys were in 'hog heaven'....off to get sausage McMuffins, pancakes, and all the stuff that goes with it.  And mama didn't have to cook :)  YEAH!

Cousin Danny been bugging us for a new pair of shoes ever since we left home - we told him his shoes were in great condition and he'd have to deal with them (absolutely nothing wrong with them).....but when we drove up to Carson City NV for the day and went through the Ponderosa Ranch he managed to dinky with his shoes until the velcro strap (that replaced the old shoe laces) broke off the shoe....done on purpose?  Me things so!  About 5 minutes later he looks down on the grown and finds $25 CASH.....he'd hit the gold mind in his eyes....I immediately took the money away from him and said on our way back to camp we would stop and buy that new pair he wanted - well now he says "these shoes are ok, I'll make them work!"  We would not go with it....he broke those shoes on purpose....he can now buy some new shoes with his new found $$$.  Poor Danny was not happy!  We stopped on the way back to the campground at a shoe store and HE bought them ....gripping the entire time!

The next day we went river rafting on the Truckee River - what a kick that was!  Danny wouldn't wear his new shoes and take a chance on getting them ruined (smart kid)....so he wore the old ones which worked perfect for the situation.

River rafting on the Truckee River was just what it's cut out to be.  Robert fell out of the raft once and injured his foot a little....but other than that no catastrophes.  Couple times we thought the waves would flip us over and we had a little bit of a hard time rolling to shore but over all it was a BLAST for all.

Thankful Thursday - My Kids

Kids - they come in all sizes and shapes.  Each one a gift from God.  As I ponder my life and look back on the blessings God has given me I find my four children at the very top. God blessed me with healthy children, for that I am thankful....but He could have also given me a special needs child and for that I would be thankful.   All children are a gift from God...even the unborn

Jack is from Taiwan - he came to the United States when he was 13 and then to us when he was 15 and has been a part of our family ever since.  He has 4 children....all boys.

Bill is our first born and he lives near the beach in southern California and does well at his work.

And then came Kimberly - married now with 2 cats and a  dog and a GREAT husband.  She works hard at two jobs and lives not too far from us.

And last but not least we have Robert.  Single, working hard at a job and a half, and living within 200 miles from us.

Now just by looking at these cuties don't you think I have a lot to be thankful for?

Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. Psalm 127:3 KJV

Memory Monday - Our Trip to Texas

Most of our vacations were limited to the state of California because with 3-4 kids and sometimes some of their friends or cousins it was just easier. But in 1975 we packed up Kim, Billy, Bobby and cousin Wendy for a long trip to visit my sister and family in Houston Texas.  I kept a diary of the trip but can't find it...I remember rereading it 10 or 20 years ago and maybe I threw it out.  There were comments such as we stopped at McDonald's for lunch and it cost us $10 (this is for six of us mind you!). We stopped for gas and it would cost less than $10 to fill up (back when gas was less than $1 a gallon).  Then there was the hotel we stayed at in El Paso where we paid $15 for the room and got a free breakfast for all plus we could all sleep in one room! (I'm not sure with 6 of us in a room we got much sleep)!   What a gold mine that was....we had driven from Tucson to El Paso and the kids were hot and tired.  There was a pool at the hotel and the first thing most of them did was jump in it.

The Alamo

We then drove from El Paso to San Antonio where we had dinner and visited the Alamo....and it still being about 8pm and only a couple more hours to Houston (or so we thought) we packed up and made the trip, arriving in the middle of the night (somewhere around 3am).  In hindsight we should have spent the night in San Antonio - but then that's what memories are made of!

Bobby was only 5 years old when we took the trip - the only things he says he remembers are the nights stay with Uncle Jim (my brother) and family in Tucson, Uncle Jim taking all of them to the air museum at Davis Monthan Air Force Base (where Jim was stationed), and a visit to the Astro-Dome in Houston.

Kim and Wendy were 6 1/2 and Wendy remembers a LOT.  I'm impressed since she was so young.  I'm sure Bill remembers a lot too as he was 8 when we took the trip.

Busch Gardens
Wendy says:  "I do remember the trip to Texas! It was lots of fun and pretty stressful, too. It was the first time I'd been anywhere really hot. When we got there we were in air conditioning but the heat in the car on the way was something else.
"I remember:
-stopping in Palm Springs at a friend of yours house (they had a pool  and we needed to nap)
-eating cheese cubes and sitting in the back of the station wagon
-low level bickering with the boys to pass the time
-passing funny roadside attractions (was there a giant tepee?). Bill had quite a bit of money he'd been saving up for souvenirs so in the run up to each place there was much pleading and fast talking to get you guys to pull over

-waking up in the night to you and Uncle Howard having a small fight (because that is what couples do when it is 3 am and they have been driving all night and I think there was some fear we had missed a turn)
-finally getting to stop at a hotel in the middle of the day. It was very nice - a Holiday Inn I think. Everyone else was so excited for the pool but all I could think about was napping in the air conditioning:)
"And that was just the trip there! Then there was AstroWorld, the Alamo, and the Air and Space Museum. Pretty cool stuff!"

p.s. the 'giant tepee' was somewhere between Phoenix and Tucson (or so I'm told by son Robert)

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad (part 6)

After almost a week of blogging about my dad, Hays Coulter Post, this will be my final tribute to him for now.  Thursday, February 25th it will be 23 years since he passed away...last Monday, February 15th he would have been 97.  I still miss him to this day.

Not only did dad enjoy the things spoke about in previous posts (camping, fishing, golf, Boy Scouts, his church) but he was also a very committed family man.  He had five children (3 girls, 2 boys) and 15 grandchildren.  There had one great-grandchild when he died. The picture below has all but two of the grandchildren (born later) - it was taken in 1977 at one of our large family gatherings.

Please see my other posts on him to get his full story:

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad (part 5)

This week I've been writing about my dad and what an awesome man he was.  You can see the other posts by clicking on any of these links - they tell the story of his life:

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad (part 2)

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad (part 3)

Dad's favorite hobbies were golf and fishing, if he had to give up one of them I believe it would of been golf....fishing was his favorite.   Not only was fishing his passion but the time he spent with my brothers fishing had such an affect on my younger brother that he became a commercial fisherman.  As a child when we would go camping, dad would take the boys and head for the stream, lake, ocean to catch our dinner.  Many is the night that we'd eat fresh fish cooked over the campfire.

A favorite story my sister tells is the time that dad and our Uncle Bill went fishing and were approached by a gentleman from the 'California Fish and Game Department' who asked them for their required fishing licenses.  Uncle Bill pulled out his and showed it to him and then it was dad's turn - well dad didn't have one - so he struck up a conversation with the man and asked him if he knew 'so-and-so' who also worked for the Fish and Game Department.  Amazingly the man knew him and they started talking.  After talking for awhile the guy left, never asking dad for the license.

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad (part 4)

Hays Coulter Post (in the middle )

Not only was my father a man dedicated to his family and his church he was also committed to the Boy Scouts of America and received a membership award in the mid 1970's for 50 years of being either a boy scout or a boy scout leader.

During his many years in scouting he was involved with the Sea Scouts (thus the dapper uniform above) and earned the Eagle Scout award (the highest award possible within the Boy Scouts of America).  He also received a  Silver Beaver Award from the Catholic church for all his work with scouting in the church. After he died, in 1987, the Pomona city council held a moment of silence in honor of all the scouting work he did for the community. My mother received a plaque.
(Dad with my brother Jim about 1945)

He encouraged both or my brothers to join the Boy Scouts.  They were Cub and Boy Scouts but neither of them had the commitment to the organization that my dad had.

This is Dedicated to One I Love - My Dad (part 3)

Today I'm posting some special pictures of a special person in my life....my dad....it's funny that as I go through the pictures I have there are so few of my dad as a child.  I only have one or two snapshots and a couple of professional pictures.  Did people not take many pictures in the early 1900s, or did they just toss out what they had?

I'm scanning pictures that I've taken over the last 45+ years and I'm willing to wager that I've taken over 10,000 pictures (seriously).  That sounds like A LOT to me and we don't even have grandchildren!  There would probably be a gazillion pictures if we did!

In the picture on the left - dad is being held by the woman.  I'm not sure who she is...maybe his mother or one of his grandmothers or an aunt?  Hays' brother O.J. is the older boy with the darker hair.
